Getting the ball rolling.

Mood:
Working

Who: Anyone who wants to get a reaction in.
When: Morning.
Where: Chapel.

A lot of people were milling about, in shock and in need of hand-holding perhaps. After working out a tentative plan with Jason, Lina had rooted around in a closet until she found a pen and paper, and started scribbling out groups. Once she had things as good as she felt she'd get them, she stood up in front of the alter, put her fingers in her mouth, and whistled. Loudly.

"Listen up!" she ordered loudly in a clear, confident voice. "A lot of people have already taken some initiative and gotten to work, and that's great. For the rest of you, I know a lot of you guys are in shock, but we can't assume this is going to get better. The sun is up now, and the fire will burn itself out before long, and we need to prepare ourselves for what could be ahead. I'm assigning everyone into a work group, and you'll be expected to do your job, or give me a damn good reason why you can't - and then we'll find something else helpful for you to be doing."

There'd always be someone who didn't want to play nice, right? "Okay, here's where we're at! Andre, Zania, Bob, Nic, Dan, Ben, and Sarah are working on building shelters! Torlin has taken charge of vegetation gathering - berries or whatever you can find - and Artemis, Zhen, Davis, and Tisi are helping her out! Working with snares and traps for small game - that's Cortez, Aamir, Caél, and Laila! There are three fishing poles and lures - that's going to Vivian, Gwil, and Hannah!" Hey, the girl didn't need her eyes to hold a fishing pole. Someone could bait her hook for her, and if she got mouthy, they could just use one of Hannah's eyeballs. They were probably pretty enticing to a fish, and hey, Hannah wasn't using them anyway. She certainly went out of her way to make sure everyone knew that.

"Firewood gathering! Drew, Rin, D, Matt, and Ren. What you find, stack in piles at the side of the chapel! Millie and Kaori are handing out tents and deciding who is sleeping where, and Millie's also helping Dave with anything medical. Joy, Blair, Calvin - I want you guys sorting through everything that might be useful. That's here, the shed, and the boathouse - take anything that we might need back here and sort through it to be dealt with later. Sally, Twitch, Kaylin, Emma? There are canteens, and a sink in the back bathroom." Yes, a small bathroom with only a sink and a toilet. Lina was shocked to find it was actually working. "Each of you take two canteens, fill them, and make rounds to each group back and forth to make sure everyone stays hydrated! Kales and I are taking the bows and a couple four-wheelers deeper into the woods to look for deer. The ONLY people who have a right to not be doing anything are Janie, Gavin, Rebekah, Esmé, and Anna. Adam is going to stay behind to help watch after them or help if Dave, Millie, or Kaori need it. I want everyone meeting back here at sunset so we can touch base and see where we're at. Understood? Alright, let's go!"

..

Joy had started a bit when she heard the whistle, but was managing to drift off again when she heard her name mentioned. "Wait, you want me to what?" she said, sitting a little more upright on her bench. "Um, if you didn't notice, I'm hurt, too. My ankle?" She motioned to her ankle, which she still had propped up on the bench. "I don't think I should walk anywhere like this." True, her ankle probably wasn't as hurt as she was letting on, but she didn't really want to take any chances.

"Your hands are fine." Lina

"Your hands are fine." Lina informed her, after eyeing the girl up and down. "If things are put in front of you, you can sort. That's all you need. You have consciousness, and that's more than some people."

.

Sally had been sleeping, curled up on one of the benches, but Lina's loud voice woke her and she sat up sleepily, in time to hear her task being handed out. For a moment she'd thought the fire was a bad dream, but the smell, the noise and the hard bench she was lying on told her otherwise. She swallowed the urge to raise her hand and instead spoke up. "What do we do about our pets?" she asked. She couldn't just let Flossie wander - the kitten would get hideously lost in this strange place. Cats didn't like being taken out of their territory.

Blair wrinkled her nose at

Blair wrinkled her nose at the thought of digging through a dirty shed. More so, she didn't like being bossed around. But hell, the chapel itself was starting to get on her nerves, as were the people in it with their whining. She'd go to the boathouse, and maybe wander and pretend she was doing something. But picking up and carrying anything dirty was not on her agenda.

-

Joy could see the disgust on Blair's face. She could tell that Blair was about as thrilled with the idea of cleaning the shed as Joy was. At least I'm not the only one who's not too gung-ho about this idea. She stood up and hobbled over to Blair. "Wanna ditch this party?" she whispered.

Blair quirked an eyebrow up

Blair quirked an eyebrow up at the girl. She looked horrible and smelled of smoke. Which was making Blair crave a cigarette like mad. Maybe if she agreed, she could convince her to share. Standing, Blair nodded toward the front of the chapel for Joy to follow, silently agreeing.

-

Joy leaned on the benches for support and hobbled out the door, stealing a quick look at Esmé as she passed. "Pathetic," she whispered, turning back to Blair. Then she looked at Janie. "Both of them." She squinted a little as she limped out into the sunlight. Wow, it got bright out here. I should look to see if they have any wine back there. She turned to Blair and pulled out a cigarette, lighting it and offering Blair one. "You look like you could use one."

"You would have thought I'd

"You would have thought I'd gotten enough smoke inhalation from the damn house," Blair muttered, taking the cigarette gratefully. "I don't know what they expect, wanting us to bend over backward physical labor when we've just barely escaped a burning house. No time to regroup, to deal with it. Just assign us awful jobs like picking berries and finding firewood." Blair lit her cigarette and inhaled, her eyes closing under the weight of relaxation. "All I can do is pray that this means we'll be going home."

...

"No shit," Joy said, glad to have someone to commisserate with. "I figured as soon as they got the word that the house was on fire, they'd be here with limos or helicopters and a big fucking cash settlement or something." She lit her cigarette and inhaled, leaning on the wall for support. "I've only been here a couple of days, but I've already had more than enough. I didn't sign up for a camping trip." She exhaled through her nose. "Then again, nothing about this goddamn trip has been what they told me." She looked around at some of the people who were actually working. Good for them, she wasn't going to be suckered in. "Let me ask you a question... Blair, was it?" She thought she'd heard her name at some point. "You didn't happen to know anyone in here before you got here did you?"

Exhaling a steady stream of

Exhaling a steady stream of smoke, Blair eyed the woman closely before she shook her head. "No, I didn't know anyone. There's absolutely no one in the house whom I would have conversed with in the real world. Why? Do you actually know someone here?"

-

Joy took a deep drag before continuing. "Huh. Yeah, kinda. Janie's my sister. Not that I would've talked to her much in the real world either," she said, exhaling. "Didn't even know she was here when they offered this quote-unquote 'experiment' to me. I was just wondering, is all. Seems like most people here were complete strangers. I'm starting to wonder if it's just random chance, you know?" She looked out at the little busy worker bees, running around doing Important Things, as she took another drag. "Weird."

This? Sucked. All of it,

This? Sucked. All of it, the whole goddamn thing, was bullshit. But D didn't particularly mind being given a direction. He was a city boy, he didn't fish, hunt, or build shit. But looking for sticks, he could do. He knew everybody in his little 'group' from the cameras, but it was Ren that he ambled over to specifically. "Y'ready t'get your hands dirty?" he asked her with a lopsided grin. Flirting in the face of disaster. At least it would pass the time.

.

"As long as I don't have to clean dead fish or some shit," Ren said, rolling her eyes. "I used to have to help my mom do that when she'd buy from the markets and it's disgusting. I'm cool with handling wood." She grinned at D and winked, trying to make light of the situation when she really was kind of freaking out at the fact that hello, they had nowhere to live. At all. What the hell. "I'm so good at it and all, you know?" Once again, she was glad that she'd gone to bed wearing at least the tank and boyshorts she had on - sometimes she slept naked and she would not have been a happy camper if that had been the case last night. "Let's go find some sticks and crap."

.

Laila sighed inwardly. She definitely wasn't feeling at the top of her game, swiftly getting sore from the stresses of escaping a burning house, being tossed around and minorly sliced up in an explosion, and taking care of an injured girl. The last thing she wanted to do was to figure out how the hell to set rabbit traps, but she just squared her shoulders and nodded curtly to Lina when her name was called. She was sure everyone just wanted to sit down and rest, but there was too much to be set up while they had the time, and they'd all get a chance to rest in the evening when it got too dark to see anything. She hoped someone in her group knew how to do the task they'd been assigned, though, or their housemates were screwed for protein. "I can share a tent if anyone needs a partner, too," she called out as she looked around for the people she was supposed to work with. "Or just sleep outside. Doesn't matter."
