Where: Chance's House
When: Early afternoon
It was another day without school, for which Chance was thankful. He wasn't sure he'd have gone even if school had been back in session. He wasn't having a particularly good morning, given he hadn't slept much the night before. He was too busy trying to deal with the fact that Devon had died. And that Kaysen had nearly probably killed herself trying to save his life. He was maybe handling everything better than he could have been. Anger and pain still wanted to surface. He still wanted to hit things and break things and find someone to blame for everything, but he couldn't. After his mom left for work, he sat out on the porch, watching a few of his neighbors cleaning up their yards. Everything felt quiet and still now, without a barrage of destruction to report on the news this morning. Chance wondered if maybe the vampires had moved on. Maybe. He sat on one of the porch chairs, staring ahead, his mind shifting back to Kaysen. It was easier to think about her than anything else. She wanted to know about him. And he wanted to tell her, yet at the same time, now he was afraid too. He didn't want her to be scared of him. That was his worst fear, that she would look at him like he was a monster, or something to be frightened of. Sighing, Chance leaned forward and ran his hands through his hair. After a moment's hesitation, he pulled his phone out of his pocket and forced himself to punch in her number. He'd at least ask her how she was feeling, just to hear her voice. Maybe if she was feeling better, he could convince her to come over. Or to allow him to come see her. Hearing her voice wouldn't be enough. He wanted to see her, hug her and just be with her, as cheesy as it was in his mind. She'd help him maintain sanity, at least for a little while.

When the vehicle stopped and Kaysen got out, and followed Chance into his house, she was decidedly nervous. She couldn't help it really, it was just there. There, and so insanely not going away. However, it was a pretty good kind of nervous. Sure, she had to talk to him about the kinda thing that Charlotte and she were thinking on doing, but she could wait to get into serious 'so in case the world ends' talks, right? Right. Instead, her mind was distinctly Elsewhere. Like, totally on chance, and wondering what might happen if they had his house to themselves. She found that because she was feeling that bit of nervous, she was having trouble coming up with something to say, but she attempted to. "When's your mom get home, anyways?" she asked. "Did you tell her um. About. Er. Stuff?" she asked.
"My mom?" He dumped his bag by the front door and shut it after Kaysen entered. Turning toward her, he reached down to pull off his shoes, letting them fall where they may. "Usually she gets home around seven. But she's been staying the night over at her boyfriend's house lately." He tried his best not to make a face, but it was clear he wasn't overly happy with it. "That's why I couldn't hang out last night... she had him over for dinner so I could meet him 'properly'." And then he did scowl. Briefly. "I've told her a little. I mean, we don't really... talk. Much. About anything." Mostly yelling and screaming, really. "I'm afraid if I tell her about you, she'll want you over for dinner too, or something. Not that that's bad. But my mom's... she's not really..." Sane? "I don't know."

Kaysen really wasn't sure how things worked. She wasn't. She didn't know how everyone else did their business. How people dated. Because, well, she'd gone and totally agreed to go out with Chance, and now she sorta...didn't know what came next. She wasn't even wearing her hoodie today, she was just kind of thereish. There, ignoring most of the rumors spreading around, though she did notice there was almost a shocking lack of ones involving her and chance. People were still going on about Lullaby and her funeral, and how badly Chrissy was taking it, and how that Dean kid was like, totally crazy or something, and there were a few others, but she wasn't paying that much attention. She was kinda sorta still floating in weird happy land, and she wasn't looking to have a comedown.
Even if the news of the badness in Munising was filtering through to some degree, and it did in fact have her freaked on some real levels...it was kinda sorta...distant. Like it wasn't effecting her yet. Not quite, anyways. Or not now. That didn't mean she hadn't lost sleep the night before, even after Thom had texted her again. Which she was half realizing he'd started taking to doing every night. Last night, she'd even kinda been waiting for it. And then he had. So, she'd been up late, and had considered writing in her diary, but had stared at the blank page for ages before she'd shut it. It was like she couldn't even put it into words right now.
Someone loved her. He'd said it. He hadn't even taken it back, he'd totally repeated himself and everything. It was...something, alright. Now, she was looking around for him in a vague sort of way that was an attempt to not look like she was looking for someone. It occurred to her that she had no idea where he spent his time at lunch time, and she could text him to ask, but she kinda wanted to find him on her own.
What did you say?

It was with strange anxiousness that Chance waited for Kaysen after school. He'd driven purposely that day because they had made plans for her to come over, and he really didn't know if she was going to go home first, or just go straight home with him. He supposed he could have asked her earlier, but, well, he was really sort of caught up in the stupid excitement that they would get to hang out alone. Granted, he had spent some of the day with Sunday, but they'd been at the carnival, around other people. Not to mention there was still the funeral, and death hanging like a rainy black rain cloud over them. That wasn't to say everything was perfect now - that there was sunshine and rainbows. Hell no. But he wanted normalcy. He wanted to just hang out, watch movies, or do something, anything, to get his mind off of things. And he wanted that with her. He shifted from foot to foot, trying not to be too impatient as people filed out of the school, heading off into every possible direction. He barely saw any of them, his gaze focused soley on finding Kaysen.
Kaysen was a little excited too. School today again had been a somber affair mostly, and she was kind of twitchy over it a little. So she was looking forward to seeing Chance, and hanging out and being normal for a while. She was thinking of her flowers again when she spotted him, and she veered in her path to walk up. "Hi." she said. She was a little wary, feeling exposed since, well. Everyone was still around them n stuff, but still. Kaysen was aware that one day, she was going to have to get over that. Maybe. So she'd do it in little bits. Or something. Whatever.

Who: Chance and Kaysen
Where: Hallway in school
When: Late morning
Chance hadn't even planned on going to school until lunch to meet Jordan and track down Jezebelle. He had planned on staying in his room all day, destroying some zombies, or writing. But his mom had insisted, so to speak, and forced Chance out of bed and out the door. The constant phone calls from the school about his consistent absences were apparently starting to annoy her. So he rode his skateboard to school, sullen and pissy and thankfully not too many people bothered him in the hall once they saw the expression on his face. He shoved his books away, or into his bag and slammed his locker, trudging off to class with the intention of paying absolutely no attention whatsoever. Except that halfway through history he heard the whispers of Kaysen's fight - slamming girls into mirrors, using a lighter to try and light one of the other girls on fire and scorching the bathroom instead. It was the first time he'd actually listened to gossip, word for word, while his leg began to bounce restlessly under his desk. The bell had barely rung before he shot out of his chair and was in the hallway. He knew her schedule now by heart and hurried off in the direction she knew she would be coming. He still didn't know what the fuck he was doing - yesterday he was ready to write everything off - he still kind of was - but he at least wanted to make sure she was okay. Pissy, or not, he still didn't want to know she'd been hurt.
When he caught sight of her, her back was to him and he slowed his steps, his hand coming up to grip at the book bag on his shoulder. Actually seeing her took away some of his resolve to be a hardass and pretend not to care, which annoyed him, but he let it go. He fell into step behind her, keeping the kind of distance she did whenever she walked with him on those rare occasions. "Are you okay?" he asked, reaching out to touch her shoulder briefly for fear she'd jump and turn to bean him in the face. Or set him on fire, or something.

After dropping Jezebelle off, Chance drove through the neighborhoods, careful as not to swerve, or hit anything in the streets. He'd driven after having beers before. It was no big deal. Only Marquette was usually overrun with cops, and the last thing he needed was to be pulled over. He consciously drove toward home, but after a couple minutes realized he wasn't home at all. In fact, he was pulling up to a stop across the street from Kaysen's house. The windows were dark, the porch light on. He stared up at her window through the car window before he licked his lips and got out of his car, digging into his pocket for his phone. He knew she said she'd talk to him later, but he didn't think he could go a whole weekend knowing she was pissed, or whatever.
You awake? he texted, pushing send and staring up at her window, hoping to see something. A light. Her. Anything. He waited a few minutes with no reply. Sighing, he stepped up into the lawn, looking for something to throw that wouldn't shatter her window. He found a couple tiny rocks in the yard and bit his lip hard before tossing them up. The first one missed. He never claimed to be very athletic. But the next two hit their mark, tapping against the glass. He quickly punched in another text, in case she woke up. I'm outside. And then he looked up anxiously, eyes staring hard at her window, as if willing her awake.

Chance was supposed to spend the day 'thinking about his behavior' according to his mother. She didn't seem to care that he got into a fight for legitimate reasons. She simply saw the surface of things, as usual, and forbade him from leaving the house that weekend. Which wasn't happening - and he had a feeling they both knew that. He'd spent the morning in front of his bathroom mirror instead, shifting between awe, terror and euphoria at the stuff he was able to do. Stuff he hadn't done before. It'd taken away from the pain still sort of throbbing along his nose, and the annoyance at what was going on at school. He had an entire weekend to recover from everything, and he'd go to school Monday and try the whole 'staying out of trouble' concept all over again.
