The Way Things Are

thinking finger on lip

Lullaby had had a busy time. She'd gone out for her walk, she'd done her thinking, she didn't think she'd woken anyone up with the out-for-a-walk-at-odd-hours of it all. She'd tried to be as quiet as humanly possible. When she'd gotten back, she'd curled up in the den and listened to the cd that was left on her grave with Oz's good headphones. She'd also wound up crashed out there, even if she hadn't intended to. When she woke up later, she'd wandered back upstairs to shower and change, then she sat in her room, milling over everything that had gone through her mind the night before.

One of the main things she knew she was in intense need of doing was starting to move forward. And while she didn't know how to do that per se, she was going to make an effort in small ways she thought could help. If nothing else, they probably wouldn't hurt. Therefore--she was making the room she'd been given into her room. This was kind of more difficult than one would think, especially when one didn't exactly have a whole lot in the way of personal possessions. However, she was making due with all the things she'd stolen the night before, and she was working on rearranging the furniture. This was more difficult than it looked, as the quality of furnishings in the Osbourne household was filed under the header 'ridiculously good' which meant it wasn't made out of particle board like most of the things at her home had been. It made moving things a hell of a lot harder since she was a small, not overly strong female. However, she was trying it--even if it was taking her for-fucking-ever.

It wasn't that Dean was avoiding her, no, not at all. He'd just... Decided that he should probably get homework done and so headed up to his room as soon as he'd got home from school and he'd been hiding there ever since. But he'd left his door ajar, so she could have come in if she'd wanted to. Right? He half expected it and kept glancing towards the door in case she'd managed to miraculously move silently and come in or something, but there wasn't anything.

Dean's hand was still throbbing when he got back from Maddie's and he'd grabbed himself some painkillers and thrown them back, before looking around for Thia, Sophie telling him that she thought the girl was down by the lake. As he walked down through the trees, he palmed the small bundle of healing mojo from his pocket and ran it over the back of his injured hand, feeling it leave little tingles in its wake. Hopefully it'd help out, though his knuckles were still cracked and swollen.

He emerged out from the trees and onto the beach, heading over towards where he could see his friend sitting, studying the now-familiar book on fades.

Lullaby had wanted to come down by the water and have some quiet alone time, to go over the book she really didn't want to be going over. It was the tone. It was like she could feel accusation pointed at her loud and clear on every page. 'You evil, vile thing, you. Abomination is too kind a word'. or something like that. Either way, she wasn't a fan, and it was hard for her to get through. This was due largely to the fact that a lot of it she agreed with. She'd skipped over some of the finer points about fade creation, and was trying to find out more about her other 'abilities'. Currently, she'd stumbled onto something about mirror travel. Which at once was intensely neat, and absolutely terrifying. She shut her eyes and drew in a deep breath, letting it out slowly as she felt her headache sort of worsening. Maybe she wasn't used to being out in the fresh air and sunlight or something, because she kind of wasn't feeling so good. But she wanted to take advantage of being able to go outside whenever she wanted to again, and so was being stubborn about retreating back to the house. Not hearing Dean's approach, she rubbed at the back of her neck lightly, and tried to figure out if she had the brain power to continue reading about the crazy ass world of mirror travel.

Thia had been out with Joshua when Dean had got back from town, so he'd settled down at the kitchen table to read the book he'd picked up from Nevermore, grabbing a pad of paper from the drawer and slotting torn strips of paper into pages that he thought were really relevant or interesting. It wasn't until he happened to glance out the window and see Joshua walking up from the lake alone - and not looking too happy - that he started to wonder. He could just go and ask the guy what was up, but it was the absence of Thia which his mind went to, so he stayed out of the way, heading upstairs and to one of the windows overlooking the back yard, waiting for Thia to appear as well. When she didn't after a while, he decided to head down and see if he could find her.

Lullaby had her shirt tugged up, it full of weird little charms. Supposedly, they were white magicked. If that was a word. Well it was now, she'd put it into the collective unconscious. Either way, they were instructed--and by instructed, Lullaby meant 'told to in no uncertain terms', to put the ones with feathers in every window in the house, and the ones with beads and stuff in every doorframe. It was a big house. She had a lot of charms. But when dead witches who are suddenly not so dead tell you to do these things with a tone of authority--you do them. Thus, she and Dean were wandering around attempting to catch all of them. They had the first floor done, so that was good. Now they were on to the second. Which meant they weren't in earshot anymore of Maddie or Billy, and it gave Lullaby a moment to gush. "Oh my god this whole thing is so romantic." she finally said, like she'd been waiting to say it for hours now.

Dean was actually sleeping, trying to get some in before it got dark again. He hadn't thought he'd be able to, but he'd promised he'd try, climbing into bed after lunch and stretching out under the blankets, one hand hooked underneath his pillow as he lay half on his side, half on his front, facing away from the bedroom door, which was ajar, breathing gently.

Lullaby had a bit of a issue to discuss with the sleeping boy, so when she walked into his room, she was less worried about his being asleep. And later--she might actually feel bad about it, but at current, she wasn't thinking about that and instead she marched up to the side of his bed and grabbed his shoulder, shaking him. "Hey!" she said, to try to get his attention better.

Lullaby was waiting. She'd been waiting for what felt like ages, and was really only about twenty minutes, give or take. She was watching the rain out the window, eyes avidly searching for the very first sign of Dean. It had been a really quiet day for her, for the morning. She'd written a letter to her parents, and that had helped her deal with some things. She didn't know if they'd ever receive it, but she had it out there, so she felt slightly better. After that, she'd spent a good while messing around with her abilities. Or, namely, trying to see if she could remain visible in shadows if she really tried.

this is really bad, isn't it.

The cloudy skies seemed to bring dusk on prematurely and Dean knew that he should head for home. Dean didn't need to listen very hard to know that there were no leads on whoever shot Thia, which he knew meant here was still a random gunman out there. He just couldn't really bring himself to care - though he'd made all the right noises at Sophie that morning when she'd brought the subject up. Apparently he wasn't on a formal curfew, but she would like him home earlier. But he was still out. It wasn't that he was intentionally disobeying her, but every time he considered going home, he found himself turning away.

He'd started at the beach - heading there after school, walking down the sand until he hit rocks and then abandoning his bag and climbing up onto the largest one. He'd sat and stared out over the lake, lost in watching the waves roll and break, the birds wheel in the skies about, the clouds gathering on the horizon. There was an emptiness there that he welcomed, could get lost in. And he had. He'd lost hours that way, until the clouds had totally blocked out the sun and he'd realised he was hugging his leather jacket around his chest for warmth and protection against the wind coming off the water. Yet still he'd stayed, until he felt chilled to the bone, gaining an almost masochistic sense of satisfaction from it. Eventually, though, the winds had driven him off the beach and since then he'd just been wandering as it slowly got dark. He'd walked past her house and considered going in. He didn't. He'd detoured past the cemetery, but couldn't face her grave. And now his feet took him to Journey's house. He was almost surprised that he remembered where that was, he'd only been there once. But it felt like nothing would ever surprise him again.

Dean lay on his back, staring up at the sky, watching the cloud pass by overhead, one hand under his head, the other at his throat, absently playing with the chain that rested there. He ignored the conversations that went on around him as he waited for Thia. He was feeling a lot better now than he had done earlier, he'd managed to sit through all of his morning classes. He was feeling kinda proud of himself, life was okay and hopefully looking up.

Lullaby dashed out of school, backpack on one arm as she made her way over to where she could see Dean all laid out on the lawn. She laughed, then dropped her pack right next to his head and dropped down onto the grass next to him, hugging the pack under her to prop her head on. "You look all peaceful." she informed him. She was beaming at him, and she noticed that he was wearing the necklace she'd given him. Okay, so she knew that it probably wasn't going to ward off any nasties, but...she felt better giving it to him anyways. So there. Take that, reality.

The rain had held off all morning, though the clouds were definitely looming as Dean headed back into school for lunchhour. He'd skipped the entire morning, not feeling at all up for classes, but he hoped that he could meet up with Thia in what he considered to be their 'usual' spot. He wasn't sure that he'd told her he thought of it as their usual spot - she'd probably laugh at him for that - but that's how he thought of it. The first students were just starting to filter out of their classes as he headed in through the back and joined them without being spotted. Getting back in was always the riskiest part. He'd perfected looking bored years ago, so it wasn't hard to just slouch along on his own until he hit the patch of grass he'd been aiming for and start down, different from the other kids because he seemed to be the only one not tucking into his lunch. He didn't have any food with him at all today. Instead, he just pulled up a strand of grass and started shredding it into small bits as he waited to see if she'd turn up.

Lullaby, as a matter of fact, was going to turn up. She was heading automatically to the place she and Dean had been having lunch and in her brain, it was now the 'usual' spot. She hadn't said as much, but that's what it was like for her. Sure, it had happened kind of rapidly, but she rolled with things like that well. And when she looked over and saw that he was there today, she walked over a little faster, and dropped down next to him. "If I hug you, will you run away again?" she asked. She'd missed him yesterday, which had kind of done bad things to her insides, even if she realized he'd just skipped--later, when he'd showed up to say hi. Which she had interpreted as him showing up to let her know he was okay.

It had been another strange day at school, and Dean had been rather taken aback by the memorial service that seemed to go on for most of the day, with people coming and going. But then again, it was quite touching as well, just strange for him since he'd only just arrived here and hadn't even got a feel for the school properly yet. He was glad when the final bell rang and he raced out, actively looking for Thia, since he'd missed her at lunch.
