Who: Sean and Joshua
When: mid-morning, riiiight after Joshua/Lullaby
Where: on the road, their apartment
Joshua didn't want to go back in the house. Even though she wasn't in there, she was still down by the water where he'd left her, he didn't want to go back in that place. Not yet. Maybe he'd send Sophie and Oz a thank you card or something later, but right now? His dumb ass was staying outside. He was almost tempted just to start walking home on his own, to give himself some time without somebody's eyes on him, but he knew that if Lulu went back in without him, Sean would likely freak out a little, and he didn't want to deal with that today. So, standing out by their car, he thumbed a message into his phone and sent it to the angel.

When: a little after eight
Where: the apartment
Joshua had set the alarm on his phone for around seven-thirty, but ended up waking up before it even, and lingering until eight. He'd turned it off so it wouldn't wake her, and just laid there for a while, looking at her face. It was so hard to get up out of bed. Because Lullaby was in it, and she was breathing softly and curled up to him. With the morning light coming in from the window, she was perfectly visible and -- most importantly -- alive. Just sleeping next to him like nothing had ever happened. He'd tried not to wake her up, but grace getting out of bed had never been his strong point, and the thunking had been more than enough. There'd been some quiet murmuring, and kisses. Wonderful kisses that had made him stay even longer than he really probably should've. It was glorious, and with promises that he would be back again later in the day, he left Journey's old house feeling absolutely buoyant.

Joshua hadn't slept well after the funeral. Which was to be expected, but he'd more or less slept himself out over the past couple of days, and he'd done an inordinate amount of staring at the ceiling. And thinking. Because he couldn't avoid that anymore. She was gone. Really really gone, he'd seen her body, seen them put the box she was in in the ground and cover it up with earth. He'd sat by her graveside until Sean had gently prodded him up and moving again, and it hadn't disappeared. Nobody had called to say it was a mistake. Her parents had cried. Lullaby Draven was dead. When morning had come round again, he'd told Sean he was going today to get the tattoo done. He didn't want to wait, because nothing was going to change.
They'd gone, and he'd stood around on the sidewalk in front of the tat place while Sean went in first to bless things, giving him that at least. Which was maybe why it had all gone as smoothly as it had. He'd told the guy what he wanted, using as few words as possible, and going through a couple of sketches until he thought they had it right, then sat in the chair for a few hours while it was done. It hurt a little, but it wasn't unbearable or anything. And in the end he'd shirtless in their full-body mirror and approved the black ink against his skin, a musical-scale pattern that began on the front of his deltoid and wrapped around the curve of his arm to the back, where it spread wider. Only sixteen notes, and the last one had a shattered look to it. No dates, no names, and the tattoo artist didn't ask any questions. Joshua knew exactly what it meant, and that was all that mattered.
Getting Ready

When: early afternoon

It felt like it was taking Joshua forever to do anything. It took him forever to sit up in bed. It took him forever to actually stand up and shuffle to the bathroom. It took him forever to really admit to himself what today was. It felt somewhere vaguely like if he could just drag his feet enough, he could make it not true, make it not happen. He'd slept through most of the day before, again, and had dream after unrelenting dream of her. Some good, wherein she didn't get shot, it was a near miss, and they went on to Journey's in a hurry and then relaxed and made love for the first time in that darkened house. Some bad, in which he just re-lived the whole thing over and over and over again. It never only took a minute and a half in dreams; the agony lasted for hours. But it was getting to be around That Time, and he was trying to get dressed. Black pants, a black button-down with the sleeves rolled halfway up his arms while he struggled with the tie in front of the mirror. His stupid fucking fingers weren't cooperating. His whole body didn't want to do this, the thing that would make her death really real.
Tell Me About Her

Joshua didn't want to wake up. He'd managed to stay asleep for a little over twelve hours, and his subconscious wanted more. Sleep was safe, sleep was still and quiet and he didn't have to think. Therefore, it stood to reason that he should stay asleep. His body, however, disagreed. It started so stir as the hour was edging into two o'clock. It was overly hot and uncomfortable from so much stillness, and he had to piss something awful. Mind still a thankfully fuzzy blank, he sat up in bed and got out of it, starting to shuffle for the hallway. Disoriented and ... well, himself in the first place, he ran into the edge of the door and then the doorframe itself, with either side of his body. It made some noise and knocked a picture off of the wall in the hallway, but he hardly noticed.
Sean was in the living room. He hadn't slept at all. He'd sat for half the night right outside Joshua's room, until it became clear toward dawn that the boy wasn't going to be waking any time soon. Then he'd retired to the living room where he'd been mindlessly watching infomercials with the sound right down low. He didn't, therefore, miss the sounds of Joshua getting up and he stood, the remote clattering to the floor as he moved, heading for his charge. "Hey - you're awake then," he said - there was no good thing to say first today.

Where: Police Station
When: Late
Sean had been worried anyway when the phone rang - Joshua should have been home already, though he wasn't running that late being that, since he'd been out with Lullaby and was a teenaged lad, Sean had mentally added on an hour to the time he'd expected him home. But that hour had been and gone and Sean had answered the phone on the first ring.
It being the police didn't help matters at all and Sean was only half listening as they filled him in - that fact he was listening at all instead of just halfway to the station was the fact that someone had had the foresight to start the call with 'he's okay, but...'. And then the but turned out to be the death of Lullaby and Sean was all sorts of concerned again. Concerned enough that he completely forgot himself and the fact he'd have to get Joshua home and flew to the police station - it was faster than driving and getting there at speed was the most important thing here.
He entered the building and was led to his charge, pushing past the police officer as soon as he saw Joshua, sitting there, by someone's desk, covered in blood. Oh shit. "Joshua?" he asked, putting a hand to the boy's shoulder.
Meeting Again

The morning had passed in a whirlwind. It had started the night before, when Joshua had received the news that September was leaving. He was getting a new guardian, and ... it wouldn't be her anymore and that was just ... weird to think. On the tail of that had come the news from Lullaby that the kids were back. The other teens, from the mine. Which was a relief, but it was all mixed up with everything else going on. September had taken a cab to the airport that morning, and he suspected it was because she wanted to avoid one of those goodbyes. What with Sean coming in at nearly the same time, it had been hard to get a word in edgewise. There'd been a debriefing and some general 'take care, I'll be in touch' and then she was gone. He really wasn't sure how to feel about it. How to feel about any of it.
