Hey Princess, it's me - just calling to say I'm leaving town for a while. Got a few things to do. I'll be back though. And I'm likely to change my number in a few days, week or so, so don't worry if you can't get hold of me. You have any problems, call the house - I'll set up a service. Take care.

Eris was upstairs in her office, going over some of the books, and files regarding both her bodyguard and her pet, both of which she had out on assignment. She was still healing up from her own brush with the shadows, which were thankfully now gone. She was leaning back in her chair, bare feet propped up on her desk as she flipped through the files, smirking faintly at some of the behavioral observances that were noted down. Yes, she'd be enjoying this.

Mathias rolled over in bed, reaching out blindly, still half asleep, for the ringing phone. He clicked connect as he held it to his ear. "Dorian?" he asked, wincing at the amount of static on the line. "You there, bro?" he asked again, louder. Caller ID had proclaimed it to be his brother. "Dorian?"
There was a crackle on the line and a voice just about came through, indistinct at best. "...th? ..uk. ....cond." Things went quiet before his brother returned. "...hear me now? I'm... stuck. Math?" Clearer this time.

It was awhile after Brian left that Olivia finally gave into the urge to pick up the phone. Mathias had told her that he would be home on Monday, and while she would have preferred to wait to see him until the evening, she was growing restless being in the apartment, especially alone. She found herself tensing whenever she entered a room, and bracing herself when she happened upon a reflective surface. But she hadn't seen the shadow, or any shadow, since the incident that morning, which for some reason only placed her further on edge. So in an effort to distract herself, she dialed Mathias' number and walked over to the window that looked out over the small park that divided them.

It was a while before Caleb said anything. Quite a while, actually. Hours. They'd gotten back to the shittiest motel room this side of the hemisphere, cleaned up, patched up, and generally hadn't said shit since. Caleb had rested, ribs still not pleased with him, though the sick feeling had abated a while ago. The pain he could deal with fine. It was really just his mind that was kind of begging to be cut out. That was what was giving him trouble. Everything else was details.

Caleb had been kind of at school. He was in the building, though he'd skipped English class, and was avoiding most everyone. When the bell rang, he was one of the first people out the door, because he didn't want to be caught by anyone. Or talk to Leija. So--leaving. When he looked up, however, he noticed his brother in his new car parked at the curb. He headed over, arching a brow in question at the elder Lockwood--though he didn't actually say anything.

Who: Mathias and Caleb
Where: Home
When: Afternoon
He was still getting used to it - having his own room - and it was obvious as Mathias stood at the door to what was formerly the dining room at his brother's house and surveyed the freshly painted room. The walls were a creamy colour that he hadn't picked, the floor hard wood. The was a bed, pushed up against one wall, a base sheet covering the mattress, a couple of pillows up top and a single blanket that he'd folded over the bottom end. That was habit for you - years of sleeping in cars and on couches. You folded up your bedding in the morning and put it out of the way. Just because he had a bed now didn't mean he could shift the instinct. There was nothing else really in the room. His bag and his few clothes were in the closet. There were more clothes than when he first got here, but not that many. He wasn't good at leaving things behind, so he'd trained himself not to pick up material possessions - you couldn't miss what you didn't have, after all. Again, another habit that was proving hard to shift. Mathias looked up as he heard the door bang shut and headed out into the living room.
Caleb had finally managed to wander home, though he'd been gone a long time. All of school for one. Afterwards. It was getting later, actually. But, he had far too much money on him and shit to do, so...home. He looked up as Math came in, and he kicked his shoes off, and dropped down to one knee, digging the information and cash out of his bag. "Here." he said. "Information and money for two identities. They needed another one for someone else."

After leaving Mya's, there was one more place Olivia had to stop before she took off. One more place she wanted to stop. With the bag she'd brought into Marquette on her shoulder, she hefted it along the sidewalk, remembering how easy it used to be, carrying it from city to city. It felt heavier now, somehow. When she reached his house, she dumped it on the bottom step of the porch and wiped her palms on her jeans before knocking at the door. She didn't think it would take very long, and really, she could have just called to leave a message, but she wanted to see him. At least to make sure he was okay, regardless of the message on her voice mail.
Mathias was in - it felt as if he were always in at the moment, though part of that was that he didn't roll out of bed til mid-morning. Olivia was lucky today - Caleb had gone back to school, which meant that Mathias was up earlier and he was actually up and dressed, though his hair was still damp as he opened the door. It took him until he noted who it was standing there before he smiled. "Hello," he greeted, standing back to let her come inside.
She stepped inside almost reluctantly, but wasn't sure quite how far to go. She didn't really want to stay too long. That would be... dangerous. Like him. Olivia gave him a tired smile once she was inside and stuck her hands in the back pockets of her jeans. "I was just... wanted to check on you and your brother, now that everything's... supposedly over."

She'd spent the day cooking after finishing Herbert's dinner. Given the lack of groceries they had, she'd stuck to making a couple more casseroles, which was horribly domestic and boring, but it was easy and passed the time which kept her from going out and doing anything else incredibly stupid - which she had determinedly decided to stop doing earlier that day. Time to grow up, make wiser decisions and stop with the self pity - and all that. Olivia noted the time after pulling the last casserole from the oven and debated over whether or not to call Mathias. She had no idea if he planned on going out again once the sun set and the vampires came out to play and really, she always felt somewhat awkward discussing anything of importance on the phone. So after showering and changing, Olivia dumped the beef and potato casserole into tupperware and headed out. The sun was still high enough that she wasn't worried about getting stuck outdoors. It was convenient that she lived just across the park anyway. Still, as she neared Mathias's place, she slowed her steps, feeling a bit off and unsure. Was she allowed to just stop by without warning? Would he even be home? Was it weird, bringing him food? Olivia took a breath, yearned for a cigarette to calm her nerves, but took a determined step forward, deciding to just stop overthinking things and drop off the damn food. Once at his door, she knocked once and took a step back from the door, praying that his brother wouldn't answer. She was still learning how to deal with Mathias - she didn't want to have to face his younger brother just yet.
As it happened, she was in look and Mathias opened the door, looking a little surprised to see her. "Hi - erm, come in," he said, smiling a little and stepping back. That was when he noticed what she was carrying. "You... brought food," he stated, the surprise back again, along with a little bafflement.

Who: Mathias and Olivia
Where: Her Apartment
When: Mid-morning
Mathias stood outside Olivia's apartment building, looking up. She still hadn't returned his calls, the news was full of the dead and missing, the town was a wreck. He'd been to Babylon, to check there to see if she'd left the night before when she'd said she was about to in her message. She'd definitely left and nobody had seen her since. He'd been to Mya's, just in case. He'd tried not to think about why he was reluctant to check in the obvious place: her home. But he couldn't put it off any longer and he needed to know. So, he headed inside and found her apartment and, having paused for a few moments, knocked at the door.
Olivia was in her room, a bevy of mild curses escaping her lips as she finally managed to get her t-shirt on. She was finally finished dressing and she exhaled, all the tension in her muscles easing. Her shoulder and neck had protested every second of and it had been as trying as the damn shower she had taken. Still, she felt much better, having showered and changed out of Corwin's entirely too big pajamas. When she heard the knock out front, she paused and listened for movement from Herbert's room, but it was still quiet so she headed out to the door herself, nearly expecting to see Judiel, even though she had told him she'd come by after she slept some more and showered. He'd been worried enough she wouldn't have doubted that he'd come by on his own accord again anyway. Without bothering to look to see who it could be, she unlocked the door and pulled it open to see someone she really hadn't expected. Confusion, concern and relief flooded her all at once, causing a soft breath to escape her lips. Her eyes clouded before she stepped forward without a thought to wrap her arms around him and hug him tightly. Well, as tightly as she could without her neck throbbing. "You're okay."

The plane ride had been uneventful, if tense. Neither Caleb nor his brother were particularly patient on it, really wanting to get the fuck back to town, ten minutes ago. They hadn't talked a lot since they'd decided to just get home and figure things out from there. Dor was gone, and neither one of them had felt the need to tell him that their new hometown was essentially under siege.
Mathias was driving too fast through the darkness of the night as they traveled back from the airport, his concentration entirely on the road. He had a bad feeling about all of this, especially since Olivia still hadn't called him back. He'd rung several times, but her phone just kept going to voicemail. Considering the message she'd left him? He couldn't help but jump to the conclusion that she'd hit trouble. Either that or he was going to ring her neck when he got back to town for making him actually worry. And drive too fast. That too. He pressed harder on the gas and the car leapt forward a little faster.

Hi. It's me. Olivia. I was just calling to make sure you were okay. With some of the stuff going on in town... some people in Babylon are saying vampires, some saying it's just some psychopaths causing trouble, but I don't know for sure. But it's bad, I think. From what I heard. Someone said gunshots were heard at the park and a gas station was set on fire and... look... I just hope you're okay. And safe. I'm getting ready to go home, so if you... just be careful if you're out okay? Okay. Bye.

Mathias was sat on the sofa, leaning forward, his elbows resting on his knees, a look of concerned concentration on his face as he listened to the phone in his hand. He didn't speak much, the odd 'I'm still listening' noise - it was clear that the person on the other end of the line had a lot to say. "Right... No... No, seriously," he said, finally breaking that, an obvious reference to something that he'd said earlier in the now long conversation. He'd been here for a while now, since his brother had first phoned and right now it felt very much like they were going round in circles.
Caleb had been in his room, though had on and off wandered into the hall, kitchen, bathroom, to listen to what was being said on the phone. He knew it was a serious conversation, could tell just from the tone going on in his brother's voice. Finally, he dropped any pretence on just passing through and leaned in the doorframe to the hallway, eyes on Math from there. He arched an eyebrow in silent question, wondering what was going on.

After Brian left from making sure she got home okay, Olivia returned back outside once he was out of view. She sat on the curb of the parking lot for a long time, knees drawn up, chin resting on her folded arms. She knew she ought to go upstairs and take a shower. But she couldn't. She was restless and pacing in her apartment wouldn't do. Minutes turned into much, much longer, though time really wasn't a factor to her. She was enjoying the weather, letting her mind wander and thoughts start to overwhelm. The early morning ticked by soon enough as the alcohol weighed her down, the nicotine cravings began to grow stronger. Finally, she gathered herself together and turned, stretching out her aching legs and beginning to root through her bag for her cigarettes. She wasn't tired, and only pleasantly...drunk? No. Not drunk, really. She was something, sure, but not drunk. Drunk people slurred and fell over. Olivia hadn't been lying when she said she could hold her alcohol. But Brian had certainly given her a run for her money and she was certainly feeling it. She'd have to shower and maybe drink some coffee before having to work later that morning. It felt like she'd been digging through her bag for ages, though it had only been a few seconds, and finally, with a frustrated huff, she dumped it over on the ground in front of her. Grabbing her cigarettes, she plucked the crumpled piece of paper off of it, nearly tossing it back onto the ground before she recognized the handwriting on it.
It was Mathias's note and phone number. Take your time. She had. Sort of. Olivia hadn't spoken to him in...god, how many days at it been? Four? Five? It felt longer. But that was the norm when it came to them wasn't it? Talk, fight, avoid. And after a few days, seek each other out and start the dance all over again. Had she told him she'd call him? Maybe. She couldn't really remember. She stared at the number for a long time before she rummaged through her things and found her phone. She should call. Just to say hi. See how he was doing. That sort of thing. It would be rude of her to take his number and not call. At least, that made complete sense in her fairly fuzzy mind at the moment. Enough to justify it at least. Chewing hard on her lip, it took her three tries before she was able to get the number right. Oblivious to what time it actually was, Olivia lifted the phone to her ear, still holding the receipt.

Mathias let himself into the house quietly, hoping that Caleb and Dorian would be asleep. He was sure Dorian would be - he knew that the guy was going to be getting up in a few hours to leave on his business trip. Or convention, or whatever it was. Math had been told, but it'd sounded deadly dull boring and the details had passed him by - something about Colorado and being gone for a while and having sorted out cover for Nevermore, so not to worry. Right now, Mathias was more worried about the gash in his neck. Which had thankfully stopped bleeding on the drive home, but he'd taken a look at it in the rear view mirror and it was less than pretty. Pulling her off his neck, whilst necessary, hadn't been the most delicate of things and her fangs had ripped two gashes from the puncture marks. He'd slapped a dressing pad from his bag over the wound and was still holding it there with one hand as he headed into the house.

Mathias had had to get out of the house, feeling the walls closing in around him. Normally, he would have left town, but he'd already done that once and he couldn't do it permanently. That was his answer to everything - if things weren't perfect? Leave, find somewhere where they were. But that was no longer an option, and so he was distracting himself as best he could, given the circumstances.
It had been the carnival, first of all. He'd ignored the police warnings, the idea of a stray gunman wasn't something that would give him any pause. But the place was dull, the bright lights and substandard rides and booths not holding his attention for more than an hour. After that he'd wandered, landing in one of the seedier bars in town. He walked in, heading for the bar, when he saw a familiar face. Well, not one of someone he knew, just one he'd spotted earlier at the carnival. And maybe that's what he needed - distraction of the very definitely female kind. So he headed over, sliding in next to her as he caught the barmaid's attention. "Hi," he said to the woman he was now alongside of, knowing that the waitress would come and he could order then. "So, you're another person who managed to come away without a hideously large, overly bright, stuffed animal then?"

Who: Caleb and Mathias
Where: Their house
When: After school
When Caleb got home from his first day of school, he was feeling more or less exhausted. More mentally than physically, which was a good thing. He'd taken his time on the walk home...even if the house wasn't that far from the school. His mind was spinning on everything, and he felt more or less more confused than he had before after seeing Leija again. As he idly contemplated it all, he trudged up the steps, and walked into the house. It was his first proper time being back. He'd had school so it had been more or less a quick drive by to drop off his shit and change, and then it was off to MSHS. But now he was back. He dropped his backpack just inside the door when he got there, walked to the easy chair and dropped down into it, head rolling to the side to regard his brother, who was crashed out on the couch. "So, I've got a question." he said, really not caring that he woke him up.
Mathias had been asleep for most of the day since they'd picked up Caleb from the hospital that morning, catching up with his sleep, seeing that he'd been driving all night and only just got back into town in time to do the pick up (and actually, he'd been a little late for that). He'd woken when he heard the front door open, but he hadn't moved, so he still had his eyes closed when Caleb spoke. "Go on then," he muttered, opening one eye and squinting up at his brother.
Caleb toed his shoes off, and twisted his ankle, hearing it crack and he internally winced, but there wasn't any indication that it was painful. Even if it hurt like a bitch. "I've been thinking. And you've been around. You're fourteen years older than me. You've seen a lot of things, met a lot of people, been there done that." he continued thoughtfully. Then he leveled his gaze on Mathias again. "So, in your professional, world traveler opinion...are women put on this planet solely to torture men?"
