"Hey, it's Leija. Um ... sorry I've been out of touch for the past few days. I kinda got hurt in the whole ... thing, and now my aunt's sick, so I won't be back for a while. They don't really know what it is. I would've called earlier, but I left my phone behind, and I just got your number back. Um, please call on this number, and let me know if you're okay. I hope things are ... okay there. I'll keep in touch. Bye. Oh, I'm in Pennsylvania, with family, sorry. Bye."

It seemed like the shadows were gone. Having gone most of the morning without an attack, and hearing from her father that the hospital's chaos had seemed to slow to a more calm environment, Peyton was optimistic that the things had been defeated somehow, or they at least moved on. Peyton was in her bedroom, waiting to hear back from Isaac about his dad before she picked up her phone and began to dial Hannah's number. She could at least be useful while she waited and see what else she could find out about Fades. The girl had texted her earlier, so hopefully she would be awake now from her nap. Hopefully.

A Couple Worried Voicemails

Herbert-HopefulSad-HA

Who: Herbert to Harper
When: 9:19AM

Hallo, Harper. Olivia said you called. Are you okay? Are they still attacking you? Call me back. Oh-- and, errum, I don't think I'll be in at work today. Olivia isn't letting me go to school, so I doubt she'll let me go to work, either... if that's a problem, call me back and tell me and maybe I can use that to make her let me leave the apartment.

Who: Herbert to Peyton
When: 9:23AM

Peyton? Is your phone off? Where are you? Call me back, I'm kind of worried. I got attacked, so did Sammy-- he's okay, Geo and I made sure nothing got to him, but I'm worried that you're being attacked, too. Call me back. Tell me how you're doing, okay? Bye.

Tyler had called Isaac from the hospital. From the fucking hospital. He'd had a brief jumbled explanation of what happened -- and what apparently was happening, as the background sounded like chaos -- and Isaac had played as dumb as he could, like he didn't really know what was going on either. He had no idea what Peyton had told her twin, or whether she wanted him to know anything at all, or what, so he'd kept Tyler focused on what he was focused on. That Peyton had been hurt badly enough to warrant the hospital. He said just some stitches and then they were getting the fuck out of there.

Yippie-kay-yay, motherfucker

hand in hair, no face

Who: Peyton with a special appearance by Tyler
When: Morning
Where: Marsh house

It wasn't quite dawn yet when Peyton woke up. She hadn't slept very well to begin with, her hand clutching her cell phone most of the night for when Isaac called or texted her. She had far too much on her mind to be able to relax and she spent most of the night tossing and turning until finally she looked at the clock and decided it was a good time to get up and shower. The sun wasn't even up yet, but she could hear her dad downstairs, getting ready, no doubt, to leave for the hospital. He was growing weary of Marquette, she could tell. The endless hours he was putting in at the hospital, the number of injured - or worse - people coming through. People he knew, his friends - children of his friends.

He had tried the night before at dinner to convince she and her brother to move to Ann Arbor for the time being to live with their mother. She and Tyler both vehemently opposed the suggestion. They had friends here they cared about, and they were seniors after all. School seemed insignificant, but it was an excuse, regardless. Peyton knew for herself, there was no way she was going to leave, no matter how much bullshit was thrown their way. Tyler had a multitude of theories for the strange things happening in town lately. Peyton had forced herself to bite her lip hard - or shove her mouth full of pizza - to keep herself from laughing, or worse, telling him the truth. There were vampires. And werethings. Demons, which meant there were angels too, but no aliens, according to Caleb. Oh, and Fades? Immortal people who can heal you and eat your bad mood. Yup. Marquette had certainly gone over the rainbow. Unfortunately the town seemed to have ended up in some dimension of hell rather than Oz. But that didn't mean there were munchkins, because there might just be. Only they were probably flesh eating munchkins. Ugh. It was just growing increasingly more difficult when she cared so much about her own family, to not tell them. The fear of them looking at her like she was insane was the only thing holding her back.

Forgiveness For Lack of Tact

Hannah-SadPretty-HA

Who: Peyton and Hannah
Where: The streets near Peyton's house
When: Afteroon (post-Geo scene)

After leaving Geo, Peyton took the longer route home. She wasn't too eager to sit around at home by herself. Tyler was probably home, but she wasn't sure she could be around him and not tell him everything going on. He already knew something was up just by looking at her, but she'd been able to dodge actually telling him the truth so far. She was pretty close to cracking and filling him on what she knew, but she still thought he would just think she was crazy. Or sick. Or both.

At the moment her mind was preoccupied. She wasn't sure she was comfortable with Geo working at some crazy bar that, according to him, moved. She didn't like not being able to see Isaac, though she understood the reasoning behind it. She didn't like lying to her brother - or her dad for that matter. She didn't like worrying about Leija, or any of her friends that seemed to have a lot of heavy stuff piling up - especially when she wasn't sure what she could do to help them. She was trying to deal with her own fears, but it wasn't like she could just pour them all out on anyone. Things were hard enough - people were being attacked and hurt, and on the defense. It was appropriate of her at all to make them listen to her when her problems were so minuscule compared to theirs. But she knew Geo at least had Sammy, and his sister to an extent. And Isaac was with Kaysen and Thom, so she knew he wasn't alone. She thought about calling Leija, but Leija was dealing with her own personal issues - and Herbert... well, he usually resorted to awkwardly patting her on the back if he knew she was upset.

But it was okay. She could deal. It wasn't like she was frail, or made of glass. Peyton would be okay - she'd just.. handle it and do what she could when she could. That was the important thing, right? Feeling a bit tired, she went to sit on the curb a few streets away from her house. She couldn't see any shadows - which was a relief. She hoped maybe they were gone for good, but who knew? Pulling her knees up, she set her bag beside her and inhaled deeply.

Who: Peyton and Geo
Where: Trowbridge Park
When: Afternoon

It had been hard to go to school that day. Not everyone was in attendance, and it had been hard to concentrate on anything with those stupid shadows still wandering around town. Her dad was working double shifts again, with the amount of injured people being admitted. Peyton hadn't slept well and she knew that the stress was starting to show. She wore jeans and an old vintage Rolling Stones t-shirt, her red hair pulled up into a ponytail as she headed toward the park to meet Geo. She was relieved to know from his text that he was okay, and Sammy as well. She'd been growing increasingly worried with every day that passed where she hadn't heard from him. Once she hit the park, she tugged out her earphones, eyes seeking him out.

After leaving school at lunch the previous day, Charlotte had not returned to day. She'd explained to her mother that she'd thought she was ready to go back to school after getting back, but it turned out that she wasn't up to it. Isadora had been nothing but sympathetic. Charlotte felt guilty for lying to her mother, especially about grieving over her uncle, but something had to be done. And nobody else was doing it. It was her frustrated opinion that what she was doing should have been done well before now, and by someone who'd actually been in the state for most of it.

She'd spent all of the previous afternoon and evening in the library, and had gone straight back there today when they had opened. Once she felt she had more than enough to support her theory, she took a deep, supposedly calming breath, bent over her cellphone, and got to heavy texting.

Having to Let Go

jacket serious striaght on

Who: Peyton and Isaac
When: mid-morning
Where: phone first, then Thom's porch

Isaac was tired as hell, scratched up, and not very happy. But at least he felt relatively safe. After the morning's absolute panic and rush to get to Kaysen's room and swing bats through the heads of ... whatever they were ... he'd called Thom to see if the same shit was happening to him. The three of them collected in the Harkin backyard, up in the treehouse, and after a few rounds of the boys bottlenecking the shadow-things down below and killing them off, he felt pretty secure that they had a pattern, and it was manageable. Painful when you missed, but manageable. So far, anyway. It seemed to take the things a while to regroup and come back.

During one of these breaks, he took the opportunity to fire off a text to everyone saved in his phone as The Group. Five minutes later, a response came back from Peyton, just as he was dialing her number. He wasn't in school, and he was sure she'd noticed. He wasn't overly worried that she was having the same trouble, given that she wasn't seeing shadows in the first place and she'd replied. At least ... god, he hoped he was right about that. He walked around to the side yard for a while, listening to the phone ring at his ear.

Compassion For a Not-Quite-Mugger

Hannah-Aaah-HA

Who: Hannah and Peyton
Where: The streets between Nevermore and MSHS
When: After school

It had been an interesting day for Hannah, really. Certainly not a boring one, either. Her stalking shadows had finally reappeared-- two, this time-- and she was stalking them, right back. It was more just playing around, really, since they obviously knew she was doing it, but it was entertaining, in a stupid kind of way. After leaving Nevermore and while she waited for school to get out and Chance or Seph to get home-- was Seph even still in school?-- she went back to that default: hunting shadow-things and wandering the town.

Pleasant Distractions

peyton profile smile red

Who: Herbert and Peyton
Where: MSHS
When: Fourth period, science

It was kinda nice to be in school, sometimes. Herbert could smell and hear the effects of tension, but only from a very few people on campus, so it was easier to ignore than it was at home or at Nevermore. He'd had several people come in the evening before who had definitely seemed upset, and had wanted to know about ghosts, mirrors, specters, all sorts of things that Herbert was coming to associate with those things Olivia saw, and that he had seen all of once in Nevermore's mirror. It was gone, now, but impossible to put from his mind, given how many other people apparently still saw them.

But school was better. Here he could focus on learning things, or trying to anyway, and seeing his friends. He got to science a little early, feeling refreshed from playing tag-football outside in the brisk air-- spirits be praised, he wasn't starting to feel sleepy yet!-- and dropped his things down, looking for Peyton to come in sometime after him.

Of Course It Matters

very serious

Who: Peyton and Isaac
When: After school
Where: on the way home

Things had been extremely distracting for Peyton over the past few days. She had been worried after hearing about the strange mirror occurrences at the side lawn meeting, and she felt that Isaac had been distracted by it too, given he was the one experiencing it with the others. There was an uncomfortable ball of uneasiness that set up permanent residence in her stomach it seemed and once again, she wasn't sure what to do to make any of it better. She had hoped all of that had passed by now, but it seemed to have just come back on everyone three fold. Even if she wasn't directly involved or experiencing it, she still wanted to make sure Isaac was okay. She remembered how he had been after returning home from wherever it was he had ended up and she wanted to make sure he didn't slip back into that.

After the last bell rang, Peyton got her things, slipped into her jacket and headed outside to wait for Isaac. She didn't know if he would be walking home with Thom or not, but it was becoming habit for her to wait for him either outside or at his locker, at least to kiss him and say goodbye if he was with Thom or his sister. She was chewing on her lip anxiously as kids filed out of the school, her eyes sweeping along the faces to find his.

Back to Normality... Maybe.

Who: Peyton and open to all teens
When: Evening
Where: Marsh house

By the time Peyton's father left for work in the late afternoon, nearly everything was ready and set for the party that night. James Marsh was aware of the party, though Peyton had a feeling he didn't really know what kind of party it was. She and Tyler had claimed they were going to have some friends over and that Promise Theory was going to play, which their father had agreed too, though she could tell he was a bit wary, especially of Tyler, before he left. Which, Peyton supposed, he had reason to be, given everything that needed to be moved, the amount of people actually walking through the doors and the beer being snuck in. Peyton had a feeling she'd be on trash duty to get rid of the evidence by the time the party was over and her dad's shift would be ending.

She managed to look somewhat presentable before she headed downstairs into the foray, the rooms already crowded with classmates. It felt normal - a party with music and friends. One of the last parties they would have, no doubt, before the weather turned and it would be too cold to spill out into the backyard when the rooms grew to be too suffocating. Peyton hung back a bit out of the way of people eager to laugh, drink and forget the stuff happening around town over the past few weeks, keeping her eyes open for people she knew and had invited.

Who: Dessicant and Peyton
Where: The lakeshore, where the art show had been
When: Morningish

If Dessicant couldn't bask in the sun, he had decided he would at least find someplace chaotic to soak up in place of sunlight. As much as he loved rain, he hated clouds that refused to drop their rain on the waiting world, because if he could not have rain, he at least wanted sun.

Where he wound up, grumbly and chilly and not particularly interested in getting in the water for once, was the now-deserted site of the Art on the Rocks show. There was a lingering vibration of chaos here, the remaining peg holes marring the ground and scuffed up earth from a few hundred people's footsteps, a bit of forgotten litter here and there. It was better than nothing, and so Dessicant took up residence, at least for an hour or two, on a rock overlooking the water.

Friend Perspective

Who: Peyton and Leija
When: late afternoon
Where: phone, then Leija's house

Leija wished in a vague way that she had eaten something she could throw up that would possibly help that feeling in her stomach go away. Though she wasn't sure if that would work. After school she hadn't gone home, instead finding a place to sit in the back of the building for a while and wait for everyone else to clear out. She felt too unsteady, too on edge to guarantee that she wouldn't burst into blood-tears at the first sign of anybody even looking her way. Class had been hard enough. So she hid instead and searched her phone three or four times for a number that wasn't there. She wanted to call Mathias, warn him, get his word that he'd look after Caleb and wouldn't let him do anything ... rash. After all, it hadn't been that long ago that he'd been in the hospital for trying to kill himself. But she didn't have it, only Dorian's number, and she knew he wasn't around anymore. She toyed with the thought of going over there, for about two seconds before dismissing it as totally insane.

Making Plans of the Magical Persuasion

peyton04 green bg

Who: Peyton and Isaac
When: After school
Where: Walking home to Peyton's

Peyton was eager for the day to be over. She'd barely been able to pay attention during her last class, and once the bell had rung to dismiss them, she hurried to her locker to dump her books, grab her jacket and go find Isaac. Despite everything else with Geo's family, her stupid meds, and her conversation with Caleb about the supernatural, she'd still felt a bit girlishly, stupidly happy just by the idea of being able to see Isaac after school. Which maybe seemed a bit weird, and shallow on her part, but she couldn't really help it. She was firm in her belief that she was allowed to have something happy and normal right now, and that was Isaac for her.

Juggling her bag, she shrugged into her track jacket while heading to Isaac's locker, attempting not to hit or bump into anyone on the way. She wondered if he'd told anyone. She nearly blurted it out to Leija earlier, but felt bursting with the revelation that she'd slept with her boyfriend in history class to a friend probably wasn't the best place, or time... and no doubt everyone would have known about it by the end of the day if she had. She knew Leija was trustworthy, but anyone who might have overheard? Not so much. Spotting Isaac, a wide grin spread across her face and she finally managed to get into the jacket and slip her bag over her shoulder. "Hi," she greeted, leaning up to kiss his cheek. "Want to be a gentleman and walk a girl home?"
