Awkward shelter in the basement
Submitted by saint_isaac on Mon, 05/26/2008 - 03:09.
Who: Kaysen, Thom, Isaac, and Peyton
When: night!
Where: Thom's basement
As promised, Isaac had shown up at the Harkin house an hour before sundown, with his sister and Peyton in tow. The St. James parents hadn't much liked the idea at first, not wanting their kids to be absent all night with everything going on, but Isaac had managed to convince them that this was the best plan. The Harkins had a finished basement, there was safety in numbers, and Ashbelle had regular police patrols watching the place (which was something he'd just made up off the top of his head, but sounded pretty good at the time). Eventually they'd relented, and he'd made the calls, got some stuff packed, and jaunted off to pick up Peyton.
He opened the front door and let the three of them in, walking in with the familiarity that he always had, and started to lead the way toward the basement, adjusting the backpack on his shoulder. It was stuffed mostly full of air mattress, and the pump thing was in one of his hands, clunking lightly against the door as he opened it and started down the stairs. Stubborn bastard better be sleeping, he thought to himself, the possibility keeping him from hollering out a greeting as per usual.

Who: Olivia and Corwin and then Olivia and Herbert
Where: Lakeshore/Olivia's Apt
When: An hour after sunset
It had been a very long day after leaving Judiel's. A very long day. She had went back to the apartment and sat for what felt like hours, feeling numb, though not as numb as she'd prefer. She had so much to think about, and no desire to let any of it venture to the forefront of her mind. She knew Judiel had a point. She felt empty because of what she was. She was a protector with no protected. She was never going to feel complete or happy until her life's purpose was met. Was that why she couldn't make up her damn mind? Why she fucked everything up with Judiel when she actually started to feel something deeper? Because she had fucked it up. He was wrong - she still wanted him. And fuck, she wanted Mathias. But she wanted them both in very different ways. But she supposed it was okay. It would be okay. He needed someone without the issues she carried around. Someone who knew how to make up her damn mind and be everything to him that he would be to her.

Who: Shannon, Corwin, and Eric
Where: Shannon's new residence on Lost Creek Drive
When: 8:30pm
Shannon was in her room trying to shut out what was happening within the town by adding more sketches to her book. The distraction worked for a few short minutes here and there, but the red head kept finding herself pacing and giving looks out into the street through a crack in the curtains that shielded herself and her room from the eyes of the outside world. She had moved into the place the day before, bringing only the packed bags she had brought over with her from Ireland, and Jasper, who was now holed away beneath her bed as the sounds from outside having pretty much the same unsettling effect as his owner. Being a rental property the place had come already furnished, which left very little for Shannon have to buy on her own. Settling herself once more at the desk Shannon attempt for what seemed to her like the hundredth time to get the sketch she had been working on closer to completion.
A black van had been parked down the street a few minutes ago, whether or not Shannon would have noticed. No one got out-- no one that the rest of the neighborhood could see. One invisible young man, however, did get out. He walked right through the side of the van and started walking into houses-- not through the doors, just through the walls. And when he finally walked through Shannon's, right about then, he appeared in the kitchen, calling, Shannon? Shannon, is this your house? Can anyone heeeeear meeeee?

Who: Melia and Alejandro
Where: Alex's house and then the lake
When: Late morning
It had been a long few hours as Melia hung out by herself in the tub; she'd had no one to talk to and she'd been correct earlier in the evening when she'd figured she wouldn't sleep. She ended up with a crick in her neck that made turning her head to the left supremely uncomfortable, muscles sore and tight from the cramped position she'd had to keep in the tub. When she figured she'd spent enough time in the water to be all right taking the remainder as a human, Melia maneuvered herself out of the tub - which was tough, given the slippery porcelain and the fact that she was trying to keep quiet. She'd managed, however, and had used a towel to dry herself off. She'd tried the sofa first but found it scratchy and uncomfortable with little room to move around, so it was off to Alejandro's room to share the bed he'd offered. She'd climbed in without making a disturbance, stretching out and falling asleep almost immediately.
Alejandro had managed to scoot over to make more room for her without really waking up, but when he finally woke up-- several hours after dawn; Alejandro was not one to get up early, and after the eventful night before, and with another warm body in bed, he wasn't getting up earlier than he had to-- he wasn't surprised by her presence. He looked over at her a moment, not moving yet, but then stretched and yawned and sat up, rubbing at his head.
And wincing. Damn, he was sore. Everything hurt, it seemed like.

who: everyone at the osbourne household
where: oz's house
when: around midnight(predawn)
Things were relatively quiet, until around midnight. The night had been mostly undisturbed as far out as they were, though Oz had a police scanner in the kitchen quietly broadcasting. That told them that the vampires hadn't moved on from town, like they had the others. Fires were breaking out, people were dying, stores were looted, it was mayhem in town.
Just not out there. Not until it was interrupted by the first strike of lightning that crashed down from the sky all on it's own, to hit a figure that was moving in from the treeline. That was when the badness started.

Who: Herbert and Sammy
Where: The Williams' house
When: Midday
The adrenaline was gone. It had been gone for quite some time now, in fact. Sammy wasn't even scared now - well, not too scared. The fluttering palpitations of his heart could only be chalked up to one thing, and that was his caffeine and sugar intake. Oh yeah, the coffee and soda and anything with sugar that he could lay his hands on were all combining to make sure that he was Sammy-the-hummingbird as opposed to Sammy-the-raven. It was fun, in the kind of way that is so not fun. The music was still going in the livingroom, but it was quieter now. He'd had to do that once Geo left, since he'd have to be able to hear if someone came a'knockin' at the door. Like, what was happening right now. It sounded like someone was pounding on the front door with both hands instead of the customary one hand - lovely. So he should get that. Probably...
Bouncing on his heels he pulled the curtain next to the door aside so he could peer out. A smile crossed over Sammy's face as he recognized Herbert and made short work of the locks on the door so he could pull it open for his friend and wave him inside.

Where: Sasha's
When: A little after, a little after sunset.
Domino didn't know where he was going at first, but knew he didn't want to go to an empty house, Fawn being still out of town. He also knew he probably didn't want to be outside as well what with the vamps and all so he went to the first place he thought of- Sasha's. After all he'd never been to Olivia's or Marlowed and he'd have been an idiot to go to Myas, so Sasha it was.

The sun had set. There was no Domino. Brian was pacing restlessly across his living room, every step a limp but he was just unable to sit still. There was no Domino. He'd said he'd be there before sunset, and he wasn't there. Where the hell was he? Was he hurt-- again? Were the vampires lying in wait for him? Did he just forget and Brian would wind up wanting to hit him for making him worry?

Who: Brian and Anton
Where: Anton's house
When: 5:15PM
Under normal circumstances, if Anton hadn't shown up on time, Brian wouldn't have been worried. He'd instead finish up the last of dinner, wait another fifteen or twenty minutes, and then call to make sure the poor guy hadn't forgotten. The fact that he was coming over to learn more about a power that understandably frightened him maybe would have called a little earlier to make sure he hadn't just gotten cold feet and decided not to come.
In the wake of the disasters of the night before, though, Brian was too tense to finish dinner and wait fifteen minutes and then call. He'd had dinner done already and when ten-after-five hit, he called Anton's number.
No one picked up.
Brian was out the door five minutes later, dinner stuck under a moisture-confining heating spell, and driving across town far faster than he was wont to, normally, to get to The House of Note in record time.

Who: Peyton and Geo
When: Sometime around noon
Where: Peyton's house
Geo pedaled up the walk to Peyton's house, discarding his bike by the porch stairs. He had a backpack slung over his shoulder, mostly empty right now, just his Pappy's journal and a box for the knife. Which, incidentally, he hopped up on the railing to fish out of the gutter. It still had blood on it from last night - Geo frowned, disgusted, but shoved the knife into the box and dropped it into his bag. He hopped down again, and moved to knock on the door, bouncing on his heels nervously. The Clash were yelling in his ears, I'm gonna stay in the city - even when the house fall down, I don't dream of a holiday when hate an' war come around...
It was almost scary how fitting that was for today.

Who: Thom and Isaac
When: around midday
Where: Thom's house
The walk home from Peyton's had been quick and uneventful. Isaac again noticed the disturbing way that the cloud of smoke hung low in the sky. It was foreboding. Which he guessed made perfect sense. Because tonight was going to be hard. He knew it already, in his gut, which was why he was heading where he was heading. He turned before he got to his own driveway, walking up Thom's and trying the front door as always. It was unlocked. He noted before he ducked in that all the storm shutters were closed. Once inside, he saw that furniture had been rearranged. The house was quiet, but had an air of preparation to it. He wondered if he'd steered Peyton wrong, and they'd actually all be staying here tonight. Which wouldn't bother him, it was a second home anyway. Already knowing where Thom would be, he headed toward the basement stairs, opening that door and starting down. "Hoy hoy, Harkin," he called.

Who: Olivia and Judiel
When: Late Morning
Where: Judi's Apartment
It took her longer than it should have to go down the hall to Judiel's after Mathias left. In fact, she began to walk over there several times, but had stopped and turned back into into her apartment. The ill feeling returned and she felt for sure she might be sick, but she managed to keep the nausea at bay long enough to finally stand in front of his door. She was going to chicken out. She knew it. She was going to take one look at him and turn and run away. Because Mathias was gone, and she could think now and she felt... indescribable. And not in a good way. She felt guilty, and horrible and on the verge of tears. But she couldn't give into those. Maybe she could make Judiel hate her, and it would be easier. It wouldn't take much, she knew that. But it wouldn't be easier, not for her anyway. Because she didn't want him to hate her, which was selfish, but hell, that was her, wasn't it? Because she didn't want to do this. She wanted to grab some clothes and her cash and run. Olivia reached out and placed a hand on the door frame for leverage. Maybe she would just pass out and not have to worry about it at all. Wishful thinking. Hoping she wasn't about to make a huge fucking mistake, but feeling like she might be, Olivia knocked softly, sucking in a breath to ease the churning in her stomach. She wanted to just scream in the frustration and confusion she felt. She wanted to run far far away from it. God. Maybe he wouldn't be home and she could just go hide in her apartment for the rest of the night.

Delilah listened as the phone number she was calling switched over to voicemail. That was worrisome, but maybe not so terrible. At least it had rung. And it was possible that he didn't recognize her number and just wasn't picking up. Now, if she didn't hear back from him before sundown, then she would worry. As it was, she was worried enough about other people. She'd wanted to get in touch with John, but found that she didn't have his telephone number. Just that she'd given him her's.

But after a big fight in which he did lose a fair amount of blood, he had crashed out and stayed out a bit longer than expected. He'd forgotten to turn on his alarm, and slept soundly until he heard someone talking in his apartment, and drowsily lifted his head to look around. "Mmmhfff?"

Who: Marlowe and Brian
Where: On the phone
When: Afternoon, around 3ish
Marlowe tossed her overnight bag into the back seat before the red head settled down sideways on the driver's seat of the impala. With her brother inside making a couple calls before the hit the road to Munising, Marlowe took the opportunity to place a call to Brian to let him know that she was going out of town, but would make it back tomorrow in time to make their planned movie "date". And with all that had happened in Munising, which had now seemed to have found its way to Marquette, Marlowe didn't want to chance that Brian would for some reason call and start to worry when she didn't answer the landline to the house as the trip to the neighboring town was going to be an over nighter. Leaning forward a bit, elbows resting on her thighs, Marlowe found Brian's number, pressed the connect button and then lifted the cell to her ear to catch the first ring as the call connected.
Enjoying the first moment of relaxation he'd had so far all day, that wasn't tainted by worry or the sight and smell of smoke or something horrible just hovering around his consciousness, Brian didn't hear the phone at first. He was, actually, busily mixing mashed potatoes, and didn't hear the phone until the third ring, when he switched the mixer off. Then he dove for it, ignoring his slightly-messy hands. "Aaah, shit, hang on hang on-- hello?"

Who: Mathias and Olivia
Where: Her Apartment
When: Mid-morning
Mathias stood outside Olivia's apartment building, looking up. She still hadn't returned his calls, the news was full of the dead and missing, the town was a wreck. He'd been to Babylon, to check there to see if she'd left the night before when she'd said she was about to in her message. She'd definitely left and nobody had seen her since. He'd been to Mya's, just in case. He'd tried not to think about why he was reluctant to check in the obvious place: her home. But he couldn't put it off any longer and he needed to know. So, he headed inside and found her apartment and, having paused for a few moments, knocked at the door.
Olivia was in her room, a bevy of mild curses escaping her lips as she finally managed to get her t-shirt on. She was finally finished dressing and she exhaled, all the tension in her muscles easing. Her shoulder and neck had protested every second of and it had been as trying as the damn shower she had taken. Still, she felt much better, having showered and changed out of Corwin's entirely too big pajamas. When she heard the knock out front, she paused and listened for movement from Herbert's room, but it was still quiet so she headed out to the door herself, nearly expecting to see Judiel, even though she had told him she'd come by after she slept some more and showered. He'd been worried enough she wouldn't have doubted that he'd come by on his own accord again anyway. Without bothering to look to see who it could be, she unlocked the door and pulled it open to see someone she really hadn't expected. Confusion, concern and relief flooded her all at once, causing a soft breath to escape her lips. Her eyes clouded before she stepped forward without a thought to wrap her arms around him and hug him tightly. Well, as tightly as she could without her neck throbbing. "You're okay."

Who: Brian and Hunt
Where: The phone... again ^^
When: Late morning
The diner was still pretty slow, so Brian was having plenty of opportunity to call people and check on them. Olivia down, Domino down, Mya he knew was safe, morning shift employees all accounted for and taken care of, and Manhattan out of town.... It had been a productive morning, and thankfully the worst of it had been first. no one besides Olivia and Domino were hurt.
Next on his list of "people to make sure were okay" was Hunt's name. He hadn't talked to Hunt in a week, now, not since their "the world sucks, so let's get totally smashed!" evening. He felt like he should've caught up with the man sooner, especially given his student's death and all, but hey, better late than never, right?
He punched the number in and waited, hoping for another "hey, I'm fine, but the news is freaking me out!" kind of conversation.

Who: Brian and Domino
Where: The phone
When: Morning, 9:30ish
On the list of people to call and make sure they were all right, Domino was pretty high on it. Not the first, that honor went to Olivia because she hadn't shown up to work that morning-- and good god, had that scared the shit out of him-- but definitely high. The diner was quiet, with not many people wanting to be out and about, so he certainly had plenty of time.
Calling on his cell-- he always made sure he had perfect reception wherever he went; it was one of the perks of being a willworker-- he tried Domino's home phone first. That gave him nothing, but that didn't mean anything. It didn't mean anything. Domino could be out somewhere getting groceries. He could be too deeply asleep to hear the phone. He could just not want to answer it without caller ID.
So, forcing himself not to panic, Brian called his cell phone.

Who: Brian and Olivia
Where: The phone!
When: Mid-morning, around 9AM
For once, Brian had, had no trouble getting to the diner on time. He gave it a thorough inspection, found to his relief that it hadn't been tampered with, and set about opening up shop. It didn't occur to him to worry about the employees until Olivia didn't show up. Maybe Mya would have worried, but Brian's first thought had been for the place itself.
At first Brian tried not to worry too much. Maybe she was just late. After all, she had been exhausted lately. When eight rolled by with still no Olivia, he placed a call to her cell phone and left a message. That made him worry a little more. The call had gone straight to voice mail, as if the phone was off. But he had a brief and rather smaller than usual breakfast rush to handle, mostly full of people who wanted to gossip about the events of the night before-- far more than just a fire at a church-- so it wasn't until nine that he finally had a chance to make another call.

Who: Olivia and Judiel
When: around 6 am
Where: apartments
By six o'clock, Judiel was worried sick. He'd been a little slow on the uptake figuring out what was going on the night before; some of the sirens had been outright ignored as he raided on WoW with his guild. But they eventually filtered into his consciousness, loud and persistent. He'd logged off, turned on the news, and seen bits and pieces of what was going on outside of his apartment building. It was after midnight already, and he started trying to call Olivia. With no success. He'd left her messages, thinking maybe her phone was just off. But as they hours went by, dread settled deeper into his stomach. He didn't think what was out there were actually the marauding street gangs or whatever tripe the news was blurting out for some groping explanation. Nobody knew anything. But he knew it couldn't be that simple. It never was.
By five o'clock, he couldn't take it anymore, and left his apartment, striding down the hallway toward her door. If she wasn't home, then he'd really freak. But then it was possible that Babylon had called a lock down or something. He just wished she could call him. If she could. Which was a horrible fucking thought. Intent on waking Herbert if he was there, just to see if he was okay too, Judiel knocked loudly on their door and stepped back, glancing up and down the hallway.
