Checking In

Manhattan x

Who: Manhattan and Derek
Where: On The Long Road Back To Marquette (Phone call)
When: Morning

Manhattan had been driving for more then a handful of hours before she fished the throw away cell from the glove compartment of the truck. Pride was curled up on the bench like seat in the back, his front right leg, wrapped and bandaged, hung lightly over the seats edge. The hunt had been successful, not that it went as well as the hunter had planned it out to go, but at least Pride was still breathing and all she had come away with were some serious bumps, bruises and a couple sore ribs. The prize gained in the end, the one that would be bringing her quite the large payment was tucked away nicely in a cooler in the back of the truck. And it was due to that little trophy that Manhattan was making the call. With one hand kept on the steering column, the other keyed in a number and then brought the phone to her ear to catch the first ring. Hopefully she wouldn't have to leave a message, cause really, she hated doing that.

The phone answered after three rings. "Price." The voice was quite stale and seemed distracted.

"You know you always did have great phone manners." Manhattan returned a bit amusedly when someone picked up and a familiar voice was heard from the other end.

"Manhattan." Derek sounded pleased to hear her voice. "You know you picked quite a time to leave town." Or, maybe not.

"Are you trying to say in that very subtle and unique way of yours that you miss me." Headlights flashed against the smooth pavement of road a head of her as the truck cruised down a long stretch of deserted road as her conversation with Derek progressed.

"I'm saying that things have gotten a bit exciting while you were gone." Of course he'd never admit to her that he probably could have used her as security last night, but he did alright on his own. Still need to look into getting a bit of an arsenol just in case.

"Already heard what happened." Meaning in the town of Munising, and as far as the way things looked whatever hit there was on a direct collision course for Marquette. And from what she was gathering from what Derek had just said it could have very well already landed in the small town. "Well, I'll be home soon, just hope all the excitement that seems to be drifting that way hasn't moved off before then."

"Be sure t'have a stake or two handy." He replied, sounding a bit amused. "So, then you're coming home... I take it everything went well?"

"As well as could have been expected," well almost, "And yes, I'm bringing back a little souvenir of my travels just for you." Manhattan voiced with a smirk that was unseen by the person on the other end of the line.

“Oh goodie.” He said in anticipatory way, not a kid on Christmas way. “And I might have another job already in mind for you when you get back… if you’re up to it. But we’ll talk about that later. When will you be arriving in?” Derek asked, done with the small talk and back to all business.

"Have I ever turned down an offer from you?" And to that she knew the answer was no, and really she wasn't going to start a new trend now. The guy paid way too well for the hunter to start declining offers of work from the man now. "Late night on Monday." It was the best guestimation she could give Derek on her arrival back in Marquette.

“Then I will see you Monday. Check in when you get in, I’d like to meet right away.” Derek told her. He had time to arrange shipment back home if he wanted to, but after last night he was starting to like Marquette, maybe he did need a vacation get away spot after all. Would be safer to keep things in a small town than in his penthouse in the city anyhow, at least it was something to consider.

Damn it. This checking in with people on a regular basis was starting to be quite the irritant. It had Manhattan on the verge of making a mental note to herself NOT to let people know when she'd be gone for any length of time or when she was headed back from a trip or hunt. Even considered tossing the cell Derek had given her. "Can I just meet you at the hotel when I hit town." She was really hoping that his room at the hotel would be the intended meeting place. It would save her from having to make more then the one or two calls she planned on making when hitting the town limits.

“I will want to meet you there; I just can’t guarantee I’ll be there when you get in. I’m not a hermit Manhattan, I will probably be out.” Derek informed her. He enjoyed going out at night, and staying out. He was hoping to meet up with someone else as well and wasn’t sure when that would happen as of yet.

"Fine." She answered back stalely. "I'll let you know when I'm about a half hour out of town." And hopefully he would be at his hotel when she'd pull up into the lot. Cause right now she was in the mood to wait on anyone, and once she got back into town she'd be in even less of a mood for that. "Anything else?"

“I think that’s it for now.” Derek replied. “I’ll see you on Monday.” He could prepare the money on Sunday, plenty of time to get downstairs to the security box. If he decided to stay he’d have to get one at an official bank. This was the one thing Derek hated about the whole ‘new place’ thing and the one thing that might prevent him from actually deciding to make Marquette one of his homes.

Manhattan didn't bother giving any kind of acknowledgement to what Derek said, the hunter merely pressed the pad of her thumb to the keypad and disconnected their call. Nothing more really needed to be said, everything seemed to have already been conveyed within the confines of their conversation. Manhattan could now concentrate on the road before her without interruption. Switching on the radio and turning the volume up a few decibels Manhattan increased the speed in which she was going. She had a long stretch of road a head of her still, and the sooner she covered that distant the sooner the road would bring her to Marquette
