It took him three tries to dial the number right. First time he'd just started the phone call, got a wrong number. The second two times he checked before that could happen again - he felt crappy enough as it was. He sat hunched in the corner of his bed, elbows resting on his knees, his free hand rubbing at his uninjured eye as he waited for Peyton to pick up.
..
When her phone rang, she picked up almost immediately once she recognized Geo's number. "Are you okay? What happened? How badly are you hurt?" she asked in a rush, pacing in her room before she forced herself to stop and try to focus on one thing at a time so he could actually answer her.
...
"Not..." Geo's voice sounded flat in his ears, and he had to pause to finish his sentence. "Not life-threatening. I'll live. Don't think I'm ok, though..." He swallowed. "I got...I don't even know what it was, the vampire had, like...metal or something on his fingers. I g-got stabbed." He had to force the next words out, teeth clenched. "I-in the eye. T-the doctor s-said it...Said I...said I probably won't r-regain sight in that eye."
...
Peyton's lips parted in shock and she fell slowly to sit on the edge of her bed. Silver. She'd read in that journal... and he'd told her. Severe allergy to silver. "You got stabbed in the eye?" she whispered, horrified. She tried not to picture it, but it was there in her mind and it wasn't pleasant. "Oh my god. I'm so sorry. That's... " She didn't know what to say. "Can I do anything for you? Do you need anything?" It was a weak thing to offer now, she knew. What could she possibly do to make it better or help? But she wanted him to at least know she was there and willing. Her mind was already running through a list of things she'd pick up for him tomorrow if she was able.
"I need to rewind the last
"I need to rewind the last 24hours, and I don't think you can do that." came out before he could stop it, snappish. And he grimaced, rubbing at his eye again. "I'm s-sorry, you don't need me snapping. This is just...I just...never saw it coming." He started picking at the fibers of his blanket, forehead resting on his knees. "It all happened so fast, I just..." He yanked a string loose. "Mom an' dad've got most of the stuff I need-need," He said, changing the subject, "but...I wouldn't say no to company or whatever..."
...
Peyton frowned, though she didn't take the tone personally. She knew he couldn't be in a good state of mind whatsoever, and it had nothing to do with her. Even if his parents got him stuff, maybe she could bring something that they wouldn't think of. Maybe. She already felt helpless just listening. Peyton got up to look out the window at the sun setting. "Anything you want. Do you want me to come over now?" she asked, thinking maybe she could get Tyler to drive her. If not, she could probably hurry before it got dark-dark.
"Can't. Mom and dad...well,
"Can't. Mom and dad...well, like I said...they're kinda pissed, and kinda really worried and it took me hours to get them to let me go see Herbert...they're in full on protect-the-flock mode right now." Not that he blamed them in the least. "I can convince 'em to let you come over tomorrow, but...yeah." He grimaced again, unseen.
...
"Okay, then I'll be over tomorrow, anytime you want," Peyton assured him, feeling the tiniest bit relieved that she didn't have to venture out in the dark - though she would have had he asked. "I'm really, really sorry Geo. Why... why were you around vampires again? After what happened to Sammy..."
...
"We were...hell, we were looking for my cell. How freakin' stupid is that?" He'd found it; found it on their porch, of all places. To add insult to injury. "Wound up down by the lake...and there was a fight. I -we- tried to help, but...that didn't go so hot. Thought we were away from 'em, yanno?" He scrubbed at the frustrated tears welling. "Stopped payin' attention, screwed up again, payin' for it again..."
...
Her brows furrowed together in slight confusion. Looking for his cell phone and they ended up down by the lake? That didn't matter. He didn't need lectured and she didn't want to lecture. She just felt horrible for him. "I'm sorry, Geo." She went back to sit down, her gaze falling upon the journal he'd let her borrow. "You tried to help and you got hurt... that's not screwing up. How many people would have stopped to help anyone in that kind of situation, you know? With everything happening, probably not that many. It sounds really lame, and trite, but you did a brave thing." And he was paying for it. Peyton sighed and closed her eyes briefly. "Are you in a lot of pain?"
...
"That's not...I wasn't brave. Not...not really; I r-ran the first moment someone got k-k-ki-hurt..." That woman...he hadn't even thought of her since the eye thing. That poor woman. He ground his palm against his eye, hissing a noiseless breath between clenched teeth. "T-there were other people there too and they didn't run and I f-flew away like a f-freakin' coward..." Her words caught up and he found himself shaking his head, despite the fact that she couldn't see him. "An' no. Not...it just itches, right now. Doctor gave me pain meds. Weird things. Kill the pain, none of the fun wisdom-teeth-drug side effects..." His voice just lowered. "Which kinda sucks right now."
"You're not a coward,"
"You're not a coward," Peyton said, firm in her belief of that. "You said you tried to help. So many people wouldn't have even done that. What else could you have done? You could have been killed, Geo." Okay, no lecturing! She paused to rein in the urge. And she tried to wonder what she would have done in that situation. She liked to think she would stand up and fight and be brave, but really... would she? She'd stayed inside every night since this stuff started happening. Maybe she was the coward. "I'm so sorry you found yourself in that position. But as your friend, I'm also really relieved that you're alive. And... and maybe you'll regain your eyesight... doctors have been proven wrong before and if you need proof of that, ask my dad," she said.
...
It was a a nice thought, but the composite metal - his father thought it had been bronze and silver mixed - made it seem unlikely. He kept that to himself as he shifted on his bed o lie down, staring at the ceiling."Yanno...at the doctor's? All I could think of was how glad I was it wasn't somethin' to my ears....d-don't need two e-eyes for music, right?"
...
Peyton considered that, and felt herself agreeing whole-heartedly with him. "No, you don't need two eyes for music," Peyton said quietly. "I guess there's some... silver lining. It could have been so much worse, Geo. Will this... this won't affect your flying, will it?"
.
"I..." His stomach kind-of dropped. He hadn't thought of that. "I don't know. I h-hope not. I can walk alright, so I'm takin' that as a good sign. It's just little things I'm having problems seeing....I might just have to take it slow for a change."
..
"I would take it as a good sign too," she assured him quickly. She didn't know much about the actual shifting process, but if he could still walk okay, surely he could fly okay. "And yes, you need to rest. Take things slow and adjust to what's happened. And you've got your family, and your friends to help you." She knew she would do anything he needed. "I'll come over to see you tomorrow, okay? If you want me to bring you anything... if you need anything... just tell me."
