Strengths and Perks
Strengths and Perks
Strengths and perks are things that are strong points to your character, or things that they excel at, or are just lucky with. Some of them are supernatural, others aren't. To have a balanced character, you need both playable strengths and weaknesses. Too heavy a concentration on one aspect isn't fun for people to play off of.
One other thing to consider before you go looking through this list and piling on strengths is if you are already a supernatural character, that counts as a major strength. If you pile on top of that a bunch of these, your character will be less likely to be considered or you may be asked to remove some. The more of these you have, the more unbalanced your character is likely to be. Take with caution.
Physical
-Ambidextrous Oh, it's fine. I didn't need that hand anyways. I had two of them...
You have no dominant hand/side. You're equally as good with either. Aren't you lucky! It's good for when the only scissors left in the box are lefty's, and jar opening. Oh, also for duel pistol shooting, and other kickass action hero stuff, but those scissors are a bitch, man.
-Balance I was king at the balance beams in grade school, yo.
You have rather good balance. Or possibly perfect balance. You're the guy who can do all those crazy tricks on skateboards or snowboards or whatever other extreme sports they're coming up with these days. You've got incredibly good control and awareness of your own form, so you don't trip up very often.
-High Pain Tolerance I'm fine. Let's just keep moving.
You're one of those son of a bitches that's difficult to keep down for any length of time. And it's not because you're a tank that can't be hurt--it's because even if you are you don't let it stop you. Now eventually you'll have to stop, but you have the focus to push through until things are calm enough that you can afford to. Or y'know. You bleed to death.
Due to the volume of applications we have received that have all taken this strength, we will only consider this as a character strength if it forms an integral part of the character and if the character does not make sense without it. Please bear in mind, however, that you may be denied this strength.
Psychological
-Common Sense I am surrounded by idiots.
Not everyone possesses common sense. You do. Which also makes you take larger note of the fact that people seem to be utter morons a lot of the time. You're that voice of reason, however, which probably saves everyone around you a hell of a lot of time and effort. Sure, it comes with the side effect of being generally annoyed by humanity at large when people continually prove they're stupid to you, but at least someone knows the score.
-Focus Shhhh. Calm down. I'm working on it.
You have the ability to remain calm even in stressful circumstances. Crises don't really knock you off your stride, you can deal with them head on and with a clear head. This isn't to say you won't freak out later, but in the midst of the shit meeting the fan, you're not the one who'll be off crying in the corner.
-Strong Will You'll have to go through me first.
Backing down isn't a part of your vocabulary. Giving in is something that only happens to other people--generally the ones who're dumb enough to try to go up against you. You've got a will that's near impossible to break down. You're that person who gets caught and tortured but never gives up the information. You're the best friend who won't give in after you've promised someone something. They asked you never to let them smoke around you again? You stick with that, no matter how much they bitch. It's something that effects most if not all areas of your life. Once your mind is set? That is it, come hell or high water.
-Self Confident It's okay, I've got this covered.
And you do. You know yourself well, and you know your limitations. Which also means you know your strengths, and what you are and are not capable of. So when it comes to the areas you are adept in, you know you can pull it off. This is especially helpful in stressful situations, because you haven't bitten off more than you can chew, and you really do have the skills to do what you thought you could--and the confidence to back that up.
Social
-Contacts Well, I can't help you, but I know a guy...
You have some sort of contacts that you can call for information or aid should the need arise. These will usually be npcs, and generally only information based. They can be a guy you know on the police force, some shady fellow who likes to hang out at the Wooden Nickel since that's where the other shady people hang out, or maybe a hacker friend.
-Geek C'mon, everyone knows Wolverine showed up in...
Basically, you're a subject authority. What that subject is is up to you (to be chosen at character creation) but you're damn good in it. You could be completely oblivious to everything else around you, but when it comes to your one thing? No one's better than you. And you never know when the information you have might become vital.
-Dependable I knew I could count on you!
Whether it's keeping secrets, showing up on time, or being the person people know they can call at three in the morning for a ride three towns away, you are dependable. There's a steadfast quality about you that people can believe and trust in. Sure, that also means you get the phonecalls at three in the morning when you're trying to sleep, but you're one of the best friends the ungrateful masses could hope for.
-Unassuming Awww! You would never do anything bad, here! Have a cookie!
You have a look that makes people want to believe the best of you, makes people pity you, or makes people automatically discount you. This can be particularly useful for younger characters when they want to be getting away with things. Whatever it is about you, you're not automatically pegged for things you may very well have done. No, it doesn't work all the time, and if you keep messing up, it'll go away. But you do get let off on warnings more often than not if you're dealing with people who've not met you previously.
-Charming No, really, you look great tonight!
You have the gift of the gab and always seem to know exactly the right thing to say to get on the right side of people, or talk your way out of a potentially sticky situation. You're also the guy (or girl) who can trot out the same tired old lines as the last meathead - except people buy it from you. Of course, this may make you unpopular with the meathead crew, but that's okay. After all, you can probably talk your way out of it...
Supernatural
-Animal Affinity Woah...my dog usually hates everyone. He likes you though...weird.
Animals like you. Even people's crabby pets like you. For some reason, they just want to be around you whether it's to snuggle incessantly or play. Occasionally possibly to help protect you. This will mean if there's animals around you who can be coming around to bug you--they probably will do. Never go visit crazy cat ladies.
-Danger Sense Why yes. Your spider sense is tingling.
Because you actually seem to have one. How this works with your character is up to you, whether it's just a bad feeling that you need to follow or a tingling on your skin, portents in your morning coffee in the shape of a thingie...up to you. This is not clairvoyance. It will not allow you to see the future, or know what will happen or even when. You simply have an internal oh shit o meter.
-Supernatural Sight You're very sparkly this evening. And it isn't the diamonds.
You can pick out who's got a little touch of 'other' to them. Could be supernatural abilities, creatures, whatever, they stand out to you. It makes them sparkle. The brighter and more overwhelming the sparklies, the more powerful an individual is. Unfortunately, this doesn't give you any ability to tell what they're sparkling for. They could be anything. A demon, a psychic, who the hell knows. Not you. You just know there's something different about them. It isn't an ability that can be shut off, either, so you better hope your friends aren't bright enough to blind you.
Due to the volume of applications we have received that have all taken this strength, we will only consider this as a character strength if it forms an integral part of the character and if the character does not make sense without it. Please bear in mind, however, that you may be denied this strength.
Vampires
-Lively Wow, you can barely tell you're dead!
You don't look nearly as much like walking death as other vampires. You don't stand out in a crowd because of this, but that's better for you. While everyone else is staring at the pale as death cool to the touch guy at the bar, you're freer to pass through the crowd as one of them. You're not as warm as a living being, but you're not obviously cold to the touch either. There's color in your cheeks, a sparkle to your eyes, you breathe more naturally, etc. Basically, you're really just less obviously a walking corpse than other vampires.
Angel
-Demon-sense You! Over there! Spawn of Satan!
You have the ability to detect demonic presence. Specifically demonic presence, though you may not be able to pinpoint it to a specific individual. This ability ranges from just getting a ‘feeling’ that a demon is somewhere near, to actually being able to pick the demon out in a lineup. How the sense works is up to you (but must be specified at character creation). Maybe their presence just gives you a bad feeling, maybe there is some physical indicator. Whatever it is, you can tell when one’s around.
Demon
-Angel-sense Oh, go flutter around someone else!
Though you may consider it the bane of your existence, you can sense angels. You may not be able to pin-point them, but you know when they’re around. This ability ranges from being able to walk into a crowded room and knowing that someone in there is angelic, to being able to pick out exactly which one. How you do this varies (must be chosen on character creation), but you can sense them.
DreamWalker
-Unfazed Been there, done that.
Nothing shocks you. In fact, very little even surprises you. You take most things in your stride - after all, you've seen it all before, except that time? They were flying and the sky was purple.
Lycanthropes
-Animal Magnetism Rawr.
You have got it going on...whether you want it or not. People are just attracted to you. (Note: this does not change anyone's sexual orientation. However anyone who is attracted to your sex may in fact be effected.) This has it's perks, of course. A free drink at the bar, people not minding if you cut in line. Just watch out for the clingy psychos...they're out there, and they will be just as drawn in as everyone else. Not to mention you'd better hope your significant other isn't the jealous type...

-Family History You’re your mother’s daughter
Or possibly your father’s son, or your father’s daughter. Whatever the connection, magic seems to run in your family. They say anyone can do witch magic, you were just raised around it and that gives you an advantage. Whether it’s just that you were taught from a young age by a relative, or whether there does actually seem to be some kind of magical affinity in your blood, people in your line do tend to be witches.
Other
-Immune to Mental Effects Come to me... What? HELL no, piss off, you emo boy goth lookin bastard!
Mental effects bounce off of you. There isn't a resistance, there isn't a maybe, they just flat out don't work on you. So vamps who pick you to be their little slave monkey? Are going to have another thing coming. Unfortunately, it also means that your psychic pal who's trying desperately to mentally call to you to free him from his horrible capture by demons won't get through either.
-Affinities Dude, let me try. Computers like me.
You can pick what you have a natural knack for. Could be computers, machines, technology, driving, etc. but you get it well. You understand how the mechanics work with them, and therefore if it's within that heading, you've got a better shot at getting it to work/fixing it/driving it, etc. than others.
-Foul Taste Aw, man!! GROSS!! Now what am I gonna eat?!
You have no idea why, but you're not a tasty treat. Nothing that may feed off of your body likes how you taste. Vampires will spit out your blood, and anything that would want to eat your bits would want to wash their mouths out with soap after a taste of you.
-Bright Presence Can I buy you a drink? Or several?
You just shine. This is something that is both a merit and a flaw. It can get you a lot of good things. It can garner you favor from the people around you, it can smooth over rough situations if you get into them. There's something about you that draws attention. Unfortunately, there's something about you that draws attention. Which means you're like a bright neon sign that says 'VICTIM HERE!' Just as it can help you out, you're also going to be the first person picked out of the crowd by the vampire who's trolling for a neck to nibble on.
